Willy and the Wogs

- By Anna L. Mann

This is a story about a little boy named Willy. He lived on a farm with his Father & Mother. Willy was eight years old, he had bright red curly hair, and lots of freckles on his face. He always wore the same pair of torn overalls and had no shoes, because his family was very poor.

Willy was a good boy. Every day after school, he worked very hard helping his father with the chores on the farm. He had to fee the chickens and gather their eggs and slop the pigs and milk the cow. This way they always had lots of good food to eat.

Willy always had a smile on his face, and seemed to be a very happy boy, but deep down inside, he was very lonely. Willy didn't have any brothers or sisters to play with. Sometimes the kids at school would tease him because of his bright red curly hair, and the tattered clothes he wore. This made Willy feel sad. He could play with his cat, who was named Jake, or play ball with Father, but it just wasn't the same as having a playmate.

Sometimes Willy's mom would find him sitting behind the barn daydreaming and she would ask him, " What are you thinking about, Willy?" He would always reply, "Nothing, Mom." But she always knew he longed for someone he could run and play with.

As the days passed, and summer grew near, Willy dreaded when school would be over, because even though the kids teased him he still liked being around them. Finally that day came, and school was out for the summer. All the kids were singing and shouting for joy, except for Willy. It was going to be a long vacation with no-one to play with. The school bell rang for the last time, and he said good-bye to his teacher, and began the long walk home.

Time went on, every day was much the same for Willy. When he awoke in the morning, he would get dressed in his same torn overalls and eat a good healthy breakfast, then off to work he would go with his father on the farm.

One thing Willy enjoyed doing when he wasn't doing chores, was to catch butterflies. Sometimes he would spend most of his day running though the field chasing these beautiful creatures. Along the edge of the field was a great dark forest thick with trees. Willy's Father told him he must never go into the forest alone, for he might get lost, or a wild animal might cause him harm.

One sunny day Willy was running and playing in the field, and he saw the biggest, most beautiful butterfly he had ever seen. He began to run after it, and it flew off right into the woods! Willy knew he shouldn't go after it, but he wanted it so badly, that he ran into the woods without even thinking about what his father had said.

So Willy ran... and ran and ran. Suddenly he realized that he was deep in the forest, and he couldn't remember which way he came in. So he began walking in what he thought might be the right direction. Little did Willy know he was going even deeper into the woods.

Willy was growing tired and weary, and pretty hungry after not eating since breakfast. He had been walking for a long time. Up ahead he saw a pond, so he walked over and sat down on a large rock. Willy was very afraid, because he knew it would be dark soon, and it was getting chilly. He wished he was back at home with the people who loved him most.

Willy put his head down on his knees, and began sobbing, because he was so sad and scared. Remember... Willy is only a little boy. Suddenly, Willy heard a very small voice, and it said, "Don't cry little boy." Willy looked around and saw nobody- He couldn't believe his ears. Did he really hear this? Again the small voice said, Don't cry, you're not alone."

Willy was frightened. He shouted, "Who are you? Where are you?" The little voice replied, "My name is Wally, and I'm a Wog." Willy said, "I can't see you... and what is a Wog???" "I'm not supposed to let anyone see me", said the Wog.

Just then, Willy caught a glimpse of his own reflection in the pond and he could see the trees and the sky, but something unusual caught his eye. He saw a little yellow creature sitting up in a tree. Willy shouted, "I can see you! I can see you!"

The Wog jumped to another tree limb and said in his high pitched, Tiny little voice, "You won't hurt me, or try to catch me, will you?", Oh no, I won't bring any harm to you, said Willy, I just want to talk to you, and be your friend."

So Wally Wog climbed down from the tree and sat down next to Willy. Willy smiled, the Wog was so cute... he was short, fat, and his color was bright yellow. He had big blue eyes, and a funny looking tail. They took one look at each other and neither of them was afraid anymore.

Willy asked Wally, "Are you the only Wog?", "Oh no, there are lots of us, and we live deep in the trees of the forest and have our own little world. a very special world, which no one knows about except you, Willy. Now you know our secret, and you must never tell", Wally pleaded.

Willy was so happy that he had met Wally. He told Wally how he wandered away from his farm and that he was lost and wanted to find his way back home. Wally said, "We will help you to go home." Willy asked, "We?", Wally replied, "Yes, my sister Polly Wog, and our Wog dog."

Just then, Wally made a loud hi-pitched noise, and out from a tree appeared a little girl Wog, and a very funny looking Wog dog. She said, "Hi, my name is Polly Wog, and I'm Wally's sister. This is our Wog dog, Lolley. We will help you find your way home."

It was growing very dark. Wally and Polly said, "Come on, we will take you back to our home where we live, but you must never tell anyone about us, or we will have to move from our home." Willy said, "Oh never, oh never will I tell. Please help me find my way home."

Lolley, the Wog dog, took off into the woods, and Wally, Polly, and Willy trailed behind. By then it was pitch dark. Up ahead, Willy could see many great bright lights of all colors. "What is that?", Willy pointed and asked. "That is where we live. You should hide behind this tree while we tell the others about you.", Polly said.

After some time had passed, Willy thought of how worried his Mother and Father would be. He began to wonder if he would ever find his way back home. Then, much to his surprise, he saw a whole bunch of lights coming toward him. There were hundreds of cute little Wogs of all different sizes and colors. Willy couldn't believe his eyes! Polly and Wally said, "Come on, We are taking you home!"

All the Wogs gathered around Willy. They had glowing lights in their hands, which brightened the deep dark forest, and made it easy to see. Lolley, the Wog dog led the way. They walked for what seemed like forever, and finally they reached the edge of the forest.

From a distance, Willy could see his home. He began to shout with joy, "I'm Home! I'm Home!" He turned to Polly and Wally and all of the other Wogs. Sadness came over him because he had to leave his new friends. "Will I ever see you again?", he asked.

Wally and Polly said, "Yes, we will be your friends forever, but you must never tell about us. This will be our special secret." With that, they said good-bye, and disappeared back into the forest. Willy smiled and ran home as fast as he could. His Mother and Father greeted him at the door with hugs and tears of joy. "Where were you? We looked everywhere for you, and we thought you might be lost forever. We're so glad you are home! We Love you, Willy."

Willy told them of how he chased a butterfly into the woods and became lost. "How did you find your way home?", They asked. "I don't know", replied Willy, with a secret smile. "I must have had angels looking after me."

What happened to WIlly this summer day would be a day he would never forget. This was only the first of many adventures he would share with his friends, the Wogs.

Willy's Mother and Father tucked him safely into bed. As soon as the lights were turned off, he climbed out of his bed and knelt on the floor to say his prayers. They went like this:

"Dear God, Thank you for my Mom and Dad. Thank you for my wonderful home, and most of all, Thank you for my new friends, the Wogs. Amen."

Willy went to sleep that night with a big smile on his face. He knew he would never ever be alone again. Because deep in the forest he had hundreds of friends for life, and most of all he had a very special secret that no one in the whole wide world had except him.

The End

The moral of this story is: It doesn't matter who you are, or what you look like, or what kind of clothes you wear, whether you're rich or poor, there is always someone out there who loves you and wants to be your friend, just the way you are... A very special boy or girl.
